• UEW Ghana, ESUT, UNICAL, UNN, others Emerge Winners at 2015 WAUG games

    The 4th edition of West Africa University Football and Hockey Championships hosted by the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) has come and gone. A CampusPortalNG.com staff was there live and brought us this report.

    The games which was earlier scheduled to commence on 15th October eventually started fully on the 17th day of October, 2015 after a few hiccups and attracted 26 universities across West Africa. In his opening remarks, the Vice Chancellor of the host University of Nigeria Nsukka, Prof. Benjamin Ozumba, welcomed athletes and guests to the University, stating that the idea to host the games is based on the University’s philosophy of restoring the dignity of man.

    UNN WAUGA 2015 Hockey Football Championship

    The games started with a football match between the host university (UNN) and the Obafemi Awolowo University. The UNN team won the opening game by a lone goal against their opponents, OAU. However, it was the Enugu State University of Science and Technology team who took the shine in the male football category. The ESUT team beat the host (UNN) 4-3 on penalties in a controversial Semi-final match, then went ahead to beat University of Calabar in the final match.

    • University of Nigeria Nsukka – Female Hockey Gold Trophy Winners.
    • University of Ibadan – Female Hockey Silver Trophy Winners.
    • University of Education, Winneba, Ghana – Female Hockey Bronze Trophy Winners.
    • Obafemi Awolowo University – Male Hockey Gold Trophy Winners.
    • University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) – Male Hockey Silver Trophy Winners.
    • Federal University of Technology, Minna (FutMinna) – Male Hockey Bronze Trophy Winners.
    • Bayero University Kano – Male Football Fair Play Award.
    • University of Ibadan – Female Hockey Fair Play Award.
    • Obot Ubom-Abasi (Team UNN) – Highest Goal Scorer (Male Football) and MVP of the Tournament.
    • Jide Falomo (Team OAU) – Highest Goal Scorer (Male Hockey).
    • Innocent Akpan (Team OAU) – Most Valuable Player (Male Hockey).
    • Tony Agu (Team UI) – Most Valuable Player (Female Hockey).
