• The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Professor AbdulGaniyu Ambali, has appealed to entrepreneurs to collaborate with the University in providing suitable accommodation facilities for students.

Prof. Ambali, who made the appeal last Monday (January 26, 2015) while commissioning a block of students’ hostel built by the University of Ilorin Alumni Association at the Zamfara Hostel Complex, disclosed that the federal government had directed federal universities to seek private investments in the building of hostel accommodation on their campuses.

The VC commended the pioneering efforts of the University Alumni Association in helping to address the accommodation challenges facing the students of the institution.

Noting that the launch of the 20 Bedroom Alumni hostel would spur others to collaborate with the University, Prof. Ambali disclosed that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the University of Ilorin and its alumni in the United States of America would soon be signed to facilitate research exchange and improve relationship between the United States and Nigeria.

He said that the University alumni in the Diaspora have found Unilorin worthy of partnership, adding that some researchers in the University would soon depart for the United States to facilitate the MoU.

Commending the Alumni Association, the Vice-Chancellor said, “You have demonstrated that investing in the University is safe. This should convince friends of the University to come and invest. He called on cooperative societies in the University to also invest in hostel accommodation.

In her welcome address, the National President of the Association, Dr. Rhoda Oduwaiye, said that the Alumni Association has always dreamt and planned big for its Alma Mater and described the occasion as a manifestation of the Association’s commitment and determination to reduce the pressure of students’ accommodation on the campus.

She said, “This project, a 20-bedroom hostel, was built from our internally generated revenue. The rooms are for 2 occupants, spacious and well-ventilated. The hostel was built in compliance with the University specification and standards. The size of the beds is 31/2, as against the old 21/2 bunk, to provide comfort and conducive learning environment.”

Dr. Oduwaiye disclosed that the Alumni would soon commence another hostel project on campus, while assuring that moderate fee would be charged to reduce the financial burden on the students.
