• One of Africa’s renowned Pro­fessor of His­tory and for­mer Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Emeritus Professor Tek­ena Tamuno, is dead.

    Tamuno died on Saturday, 11th April, 2015 in Ibadan, aged 83.

    His death came as a shock to friends and col­leagues as he was said to have recovered and looking healthy after returning from the United States where he received treatment last month.

    Tamuno attended St Peter’s School in his hometown of Okrika, Rivers State for primary education. Upon completion he attended Okrika Grammar School. From 1953 to 1958 he studied history at the University of Ibadan before leaving the country in 1960 to continue his studies at Birkbeck, University of London andColumbia University. In 1962 he joined the Department of History at the University of Ibadan where he remains as Professor Emeritus.

    In addition to his administrative and teaching career, he is an author and has chaired public service commissions.

    Some of his books are Nigeria and Elective Representation (1966); The evolution of the Nigerian state: The Southern phase (1972); Herbert Macaulay, Nigerian patriot (1975); Nigeria: Its people and its problems; amongst others.
