• The Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Julius A. Okojie, has assured the
Plateau State University, Bokkos, that the Commission would do all within its powers to resolve the problems rocking the Institution.

The NUC Scribe said this when the Fact-finding Panel set by the Commission to investigate the crisis that led to the shutdown of the University, presented its report to the NUC Management.

Prof. Okojie stated that the University could not be granted accreditation without initially finding out how the students were admitted into the Institution’s programmes.

“It was necessary to know if the students were admitted through JAMB to enable the Commission take informed decision on whether they should be dispatched to other universities”, he said.

The NUC secretary said that the Commission would also apply sanctions, where applicable, and promised to write a strong recommendation to the Honourable Minister of Education to suspend admission to the University and also inform him of the actions that the Commission had decided to take concerning the issue.

The Chairman of the Committee, Emeritus Professor Peter Adeniyi, informed the NUC Scribe that the Committee highlighted in its report, some of the issues that led to the closure of the University, including the fact that for nine years no students had graduated from the University.

The Committee also noted that 17 programmes of the University had not been accredited, while some of the Institution’s principal officers were inexperienced.

Adeniyi said that most of the funds released to the Institution had not been used to develop the University, adding that there was no evidence that these funds were utilised as most academic departments had just two lecturers. This, the Committee said, would lead to the production of low quality graduates.
