• The Principal of Federal Government College, Birnin-Yauri in Kebbi state, Mr Maiko Emmanuel, has expressed concern over the dearth of English and Mathematics teachers in the institution.

He expressed the concern at the Annual General Meeting of the Parents Teachers Association (PTA) of the college held on Saturday at the school auditorium.

Emmanuel said that the college, with over 600 students drawn from across the country, had no qualified English teacher.

He said that the school also had only two maths teachers and appealed to the parents to assist the school by scouting for qualified part-time teachers.

The principal said that the dearth of the maths and English teachers had negatively affected the performances of the students in WAEC and NECO examinations in the past.

He urged the PTA to assist in paying the allowances of the part-time teachers in order to encourage and retain their services in the school.

“We cannot continue to rely on corps members alone, hence the need to engage the services of qualified part-time teachers particularly in mathematics and English.

“The system brought up by the Federal Ministry of Education now will make it difficult for us to cope with the payment of part-time teachers since there is no provision for such (expenditure) in the sub-heads”, he added.

Emmanuel commended the PTA for executing laudable projects for the welfare of teachers and students of the school and urged the parents to continue to partner with the school management in order to enhance the Standards of teaching in the school. (NAN)
