A total of 10,653 graduands received various degree certificates during the 5th Convocation ceremony of the National Open University (NOUN) held on Saturday, 16th January, 2016.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof Vincent Ado Tenebe, said that 15 of the graduands bagged First Class Honours.

Prof. Tenebe decried the continued discrimination of the graduates of the university by the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and the Nigerian Law School (NLS).

He said graduates of the university are not mobilized to participate in NYSC while the law graduates are also not allowed to attend the Nigerian Law School, making it impossible for them to qualify as practicing lawyers.

The VC therefore called on the appropriate agencies responsible for NYSC and legal education in the country, to reconsider their positions.

Highlight of the ceremony was the recognition to outstanding graduands like Rear Admiral Orisha, a 70-year old man who made First Class in Mathematics and Udo Ukeme Effiong, who was the best graduating student with 4.71.
