• The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa, has given a three-week ultimatum to the management of the institution to address lingering staff welfare issues or face an indefinite strike.

The Chairman of the union, Mrs Benedicta Njoku, who gave the threat on Thursday said: “The joint union has given the management of this institution three weeks ultimatum to pay 2014 staff arrears.

“We are also calling for the payment of various staff claims, implementation of 2015 staff promotion, among others, failure of which we will embark on indefinite strike,” she said.

She said that payment of outstanding staff claims and implementation of 2015 staff promotion, among others, would improve the living condition of the workers, boost their morale and enhance productivity.

JAC comprised the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic (ASUP), Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Polytechnic (SSANIP) and Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU).

Njoku said that the union had several meetings with the management on the union’s demands, but lamented that the efforts remained fruitless, hence the warning for the ultimatum.

Reacting to the development, Dr Hassan Sani, the Deputy Rector of the polytechnic, said that efforts were on to address the union’s demands to sustain prevailing peace in the institution.

He assured the staff of the management’s resolve to improve their working conditions.

Sani urged the union members to remain calm as the polytechnic needed their maximum cooperation to address her challenges and move greater heights. (NAN)
