• The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has inaugurated the Zero Tolerance for Corruption (ZTC) Club at the Federal University of Technology Akure, as part of its efforts in providing a platform for engaging Nigerian students in the fight against corruption.

    Addressing students at the inauguration the Executive Chairman of EFCC, Alhaji Ibrahim Lamorde who was represented by Mr. Ifeanyi Nwajah, Deputy Director, Public Affairs Department commended the Vice-Chancellor of FUTA, Prof. Adebiyi Daramola for his support and commitment to the fight against corruption, economic and financial crimes.

    He said that the analysis resulting from the cases handled by the EFCC shows that youths of tertiary institution ages, account for over 50% of the investigations and arrests carried out in the EFCC.

    The Executive Chairman said it was heartbreaking to see many otherwise potential leaders of our country and continent languishing in prisons, adding that on a daily basis the commission receives petitions, arrests, detains and prosecutes offenders of various internet scams, who are mostly undergraduates.

    Lamorde warned students to desist from using the internet to defraud innocent people as there are many positive uses of the internet. He enjoined the University authorities to partner with the EFCC and urged all the students to join the club and fight against all acts that are unethical and immoral.

    Presenting a paper titled: The Role of Students of Tertiary Institutions in the Fight Against Economic and Financial Crimes, the Head, EFCC enlightenment and Re- orientation Unit, Hajia Aisha Larai Musa said it was against the backdrop of the high rate of criminal activities in tertiary institutions and the persuasive nature of corruption, economic and financial crimes in Nigeria, that the EFCC under its prevention mandate came up with the idea of establishing Zero Tolerance for Corruption (ZTC) Clubs.

    She said the ZTC is a nonpartisan and nonprofit making club with the aim of imparting skills and the anti-corruption spirit to its student members in tertiary institutions who will then spread the acquired skills and positive attitudes to the rest of the society.
