• The Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) has solicited the assistance of the Minister of Education, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, in getting approval for Pharmacy Doctoral Level training in Nigeria.

The President of the society, Mr Olumide Akintayo, who made the appeal when he visited the minister in Abuja on Tuesday, said that advanced training prepares pharmacists to assume patient care roles within the health care team in order to meet the increasing demands of health care delivery.

“In the US, the first major step toward educational advancement was the transition from the Bachelor of Science degree to Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm D) as entry-level for pharmacy practice.

“The Pharm. D curriculum provides pharmacists with specialised clinical training that focuses on the development of professional competencies and confidence in the provision of evidence-based patient-oriented care.

“We solicit your immediate intervention and assistance to get the Federal Executive Council to approve the Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards (B-MAS) of  Pharm. D programme canvassed by the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria,’’ he said.

Akintayo said that PSN was an umbrella body of registered pharmacists in Nigeria with no fewer than 20,000 members.

Responding, Shekarau said that the ministry would always be ready to assist the society in whatever capacity it could, especially in the area of training.

Shekarau said that health was a serious issue while the services of pharmacist were vital to the survival of society, especially in regulating the use of drugs and checking drug abuse. (NAN)
