• The first indigenous and autonomous university in Nigeria is the University of Nigeria, Nsukka which was formally opened in 1960 and is located in Enugu State.

    Since the establishment of UNN, a total of one hundred and forty one (141) universities has been approved by the National Universities Commission. The University of Ibadan, formerly the University College of Ibadan (1948), became an independent university in 1963.

        UI was confirmed as a university in 1963. It used to be a College. Read the post well.
