AFRICA- The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has been dissolved following allegations of massive malpractices that trailed the conduct of secondary school exams last year.

This was made known by the Education Cabinet Secretary, Fred Matiang’i, in Nairobi, yesterday.

He said that the government has already approved the appointment of a new board under George Magoha, which is aimed at restoring credibility and faith in national examinations.

It was reported that the national examination papers were leaked to the public and shared on social media sites ahead of students sitting for the exams, which made many Kenyans to question the credibility of the recently released results.

The former chief executive of the board and eight other officials have been told to make police statements to explain their role in the national embarrassment.

Meanwhile, members of various teachers’ union in Kenya have expressed their support for the disbandment of exams’ board.

The leadership of Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) and the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) however said the dissolution of the National Examinations Council board was not enough.

According to the KUPPET Secretary General, Akelo Misori, administrative lapses must be identified and persons held to account for their actions.
