• The African University of Science and Technology (AUST), Abuja, has been declared ready for World Bank funding as one of the 19 African Centres of Excellence (ACE) selected in Nigeria.

Speaking, during a Press Conference on Monday, the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Prof. Julius Okojie, disclosed that the declaration was a confirmation that the University had fulfilled all the outstanding requirements, including the signing of the performance contract, legal opinion on the performance contract, the partnership agreements, project accounts in line with the requirements of ACE and proper composition of the Project Implementation Team.

The Executive Secretary stated that the declaration had put to rest the danger of Nigeria losing the sum of eight million dollars ($8,000,000.00) meant for one of its 10 African Centres of Excellence, at a time the country was in dire need of development.

He expressed satisfaction that Nigeria was able to retain its 10 Centres as well as the specific programme (Pan African Materials Institute) that won the ACE in AUST.

Prof. Okojie stated that the programme, which would use a system-based interdisciplinary approach to undertake training and research activities in the areas of materials for solar energy, health, water purification and affordable housing/infrastructure, would also support the training of a critical mass of PhD graduates and professionals from the industry government, business and development partners. It would contribute effectively to the development of West and Central Africa.
