• The Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof. Julius Okojie, has charged the African University of Science and Technology (AUST) to ensure the delivery of the Africa Centre of Excellence (ACE) programme in Material Science.

Speaking when the AUST signed its ACE Performance Contract with the NUC, the Executive Secretary admonished the University to comply with the rules guiding the implementation of the ACE Project, as stipulated in the Project Implementation Manual and the Performance Contract.

The NUC Scribe recalled that the NUC hosted a meeting with a team from the World Bank in 2012 to brainstorm on Nigeria’s participation in the then proposed Regional Higher Education Africa Centre of Excellence Project, which was targeted at universities with strong postgraduate training and research in Africa.

He informed the AUST delegation that it was after the preliminary discussions between the World Bank and a number of countries that Nigeria, the Republic of Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Ghana, Senegal and Togo agreed to participate in the Project.

Prof. Okojie noted that the ACE Project was launched to focus on three thematic areas, including: Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM); Health Sciences; and Agriculture.

He added that the components of the Project were to build capacity in competitively selected institutions to produce in-demand highly skilled labour and applied research, and for the newly created Centres of Excellence to facilitate regional impact within the West and Central African sub-region, through talent and labour mobility, particularly in higher education services.
