Waziri Umaru Federal Polytechnic Pulls Out Of ASUP Strike
The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Waziri Umaru Federal Polytechnic, Birnin Kebbi, on Tuesday announced temporary suspension of its nine-months-old strike.
Malam Kabiru Yunusa, the Chairman of the union said the suspension was to allow students complete the 2012/ 2013 academic session that was disrupted by the strike.
He told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Birnin Kebbi that the lecturers would resume on Monday, April 28.
Yunusa assured that the resumption was not meant to sabotage the ongoing nationwide strike by ASUP.
According to him, the polytechnic has no reason to continue with the strike because the major demands of ASUP, including the inauguration of councils for polytechnics and formation of needs assessment committees, have been met.
“Our branch is only expecting the unconditional implementation of CONTISS 15 in the near future.
“The Federal Government has directed the national chairman of ASUP to liaise with the Head of Service and the Minister of Education to consider how the disparity between university Degree and HND will be bridged,” he said.
He therefore called on academic staff of the institution to resume work as scheduled.
NAN reports that the decision by the branch had polarised the lecturers, with some supporting it as “a patriotic gesture” while others were totally opposed to it, saying it would sabotage future efforts of ASUP.
When contacted on the announcement, the Rector of the polytechnic, Malam Sani Zuru, declined comment. (NAN)
