Nasarawa State Polytechnic Students Lament Unlawful Arrest By Police
The Nasarawa State Polytechnic (NASPOLY), Lafia, students has lamented what they described as incessant unlawful arrests by the Police under the pretence of curbing incessant cult clashes in the institution and its environs.
Reports showed that about 25 students, among whom were four ladies, were arrested last Friday night by police from Area Command in Lafia and detained till evening on Saturday, thereby denying them the chance to write their examination on that fateful day.
It was gathered that those who were able to pay their way through regained their freedom while those had no money now have to face a carryover.
One of the victims, Daniel, surname withheld, said “we were coming out of school premises after we finished reading because we have examination on Saturday. As we were coming out, very close to school gate, we were intercepted by police. They didn’t ask us any question, what they said was that, everybody should enter their Hilux van”.
“As we got to the station, they said we were arrested for late hour. They searched us and discovered nothing yet refused to let us go even when we pleaded with them that we had examination the next day” he lamented.
Another victim, who did not want his name in print, told our reporter that: “If they arrest you, they will delegate someone among them to ask if you have anything to settle the leader of the team, so as to regain your freedom”.
When contacted on phone in Lafia, the state capital, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Ugochukwu Theodore confirmed the arrest, saying they were later released the following day after the interrogations. Source: Leadership Newspaper
