Lead City University First Class Graduate Sent To Prison For Internet Fraud
A 23-year-old first class graduate of Lead City University, Ibadan, Olakunle Akanni, has been jailed for defrauding an American woman, Diana Huizenga, of over $12,000 (N1.92 million) through an internet love scam.
The presiding judge at the Ikeja High Court in Lagos, Justice Lateef Lawal-Akapo sentenced Akanni to one year imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to the offence which contravened Section 419 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State, 2003.
Justice Lawal-Akapo convicted the accused on a two-count charge of conspiracy and obtaining money under false pretences preferred against him.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arrested Akanni after he falsely presented himself to 77-year-old Huizenga, as one Robert Lewis, a white American living in Nigeria, who was in love with her.
He used the “love scam” to defraud the woman and went as far as inviting her to Nigeria with $90,000 before he was apprehended.
The judge ordered the defendant, Akanni, to pay the sum of N2 million which is the equivalent of $12,820 to the victim, as restitution and then write an undertaking to be submitted to the EFCC that he would be of good behaviour upon his release from prison custody.
