KWASU Gets New College Provost
The Vice-Chancellor, Kwara State University, Malete, Professor AbdulRasheedNa’Allah has approved the appointment of Professor Sakah Mahmud as the new Provost for the University’s College of Humanities, Management and Social Sciences.
The appointment which he said is based on Professor Mahmud’s exemplary leadership qualities, wealth of experience and proven track record of achievements, was announced on April 15, 2014 to take effect from July 1, 2014.
The new Provost who is succeeding Professor AbiolaIrele is also the Academic Coordinator to the Vice-Chancellor.
He has a Ph.D in Comparative Politics and International Relations from the University of Denver, Colorado, USA, after concluding his Master’s programme from the same University.
He joined the Kwara State University in 2010, as the pioneer Head of Department, Department of Political Science and later of the merged Department of Social Sciences and Global Studies.
Prior to this, Professor Mahmud taught at the University of Colorado at Denver; the University of Denver; the Metropolitan State University of Denver and Transylvania University, Lexington, Kentucky.
He received several academic awards such as the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH); Visiting Scholar, Summer Institute for Faculty at the University of Chicago (2002) on “Societal Transformation and Legitimization in early Islamic States,’’. A full-year Rockefeller Foundation Fellowship for research on religious conflict and peace building at the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies, University of Notre Dame, Indiana USA (2003-2004) and finally, the Outstanding Faculty of the Year Award, Transylvania University, Lexington, Kentucky (2003). He was alsoa keynote speaker at the African Students Annual Conference, Institute for Social Studies (ISS), at the Hague, The Netherlands (October, 2006).
The don’s research interest and teaching have focused on issues of African development in international and comparative perspectives.
His publications have been widely cited by other scholars worldwide and many of the publications used as course materials in such top universities as Columbia University, Pennysylvania University, University of California, San Diego and the University of Toronto.
