The Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission had revealed that about 1.1 million students seeking admission into Nigerian universities will not be admitted this year.
It will be recalled that over 1.5 million candidates sat for the 2016 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination organized by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board.
Okojie, who made the revelation in Abuja while handing over the Certificate of Recognition for the new Edo State University, Iyanmo to Governor Adams Oshiomhole, solicited for more universities in Nigeria.
He said the carrying capacity of the whole Nigerian universities is currently at 400,000.
The NUC scribe admitted that the number of candidates that sits for JAMB UTME every year out numbers the available spaces in Nigerian universities.
He said that the new universities were needed to boost access to higher education while making sure that quality was not compromised.
