Some residents in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), on Friday advised parents against sex preferences among their children.
Those who spoke with the News
Mrs Magdalene Bature, a psychologist, said parents giving preferences to a particular sex sometimes brought conflict in the home.
Bature said directly or indirectly, the not-preferred sex would begin to feel intimidated without voicing out.
According to her, both the male and the female child make impact in the family depending on the role each played.
Similarly, Pastor Alex Mba of Chapel of Life Ministries, Nyanya, said children, irrespective of the sex , are heritage of the Lord and should not be discriminated against.
“Nobody has the power to produce a string of hair, let alone human being. Every child is a joy and a reward from God.
“As parents, when you train a child in the way to go, then when he or she grows up, he will not depart from it, girl or boy,” Mba said.
Also, Damilola Sowunmi, a student, said there was need for parents to love their children equally.
“My Daddy and Mummy love us equally because they buy us the same colour of dresses and we sleep in the same room.
“I will not be happy if my parents love any of us more than the other; It is bad because they gave birth to all of us,’’Damilola said.
However, Mr Tom Nduka, a public servant, said a male child played more impactful role in the family because he remained in the family and keep the family name, while the female children are married out.
He added that it was important for every family to have a male child to keep the family lineage.
Mrs Felicia Ajah, a Teacher, said the idea of child’s impact on the family depended on the training the child got from the parents, society and the ability and character of the child.
