• A former Nigerian senator, Adamu Gumba, has advocated the use of solely indigenous books in Nigerian public schools, to check the indoctrination of students as a result of the use of foreign literature.

Gumba, who represented Bauchi South Senatorial District in the 7th Senate, made the suggestion on Saturday in Kaduna during the launch of a book, titled, “Islamic Studies for Junior and Senior Secondary Schools.”

He explained that such a measure would shield students from being brain-washed into embracing radical and extremist western opinions and views, contained in western literature.

“Most of the literature being taught in our public schools are either contained in foreign books or authored by foreigners.

“The use of such books is largely responsible for entrenching radical and extremist ideas and opinion in our children, thereby leading to high level of moral decadence in our society.

“I therefore recommend that indigenous books, written by our own scholars, who took into cognizance, our moral values, norms and tradition, be used in our schools to teach our children,” he said.

Earlier, the Chairman of the occasion, Dr. Umaru Mutallab, explained that the book was a revision of the maiden edition titled, “Islamic Religion Studies in West Africa”, published by late Justice Bashir Sambo and another author, in 1974.

Mutallab said that the review became imperative in view of the introduction of 6-3-3-4 education curriculum in the country, which rendered the maiden edition obsolete.

“It was against this background that Bashir Sambo Centre for Islamic Da’awah, mandated Malam Mukhtar Lere in 2012, to review the existing literature, to be in conformity with the current academic curriculum,” he said.

Mutallab said the book, published in two editions, one for Junior and the other for Senior secondary schools, would lay a very good foundation for Islamic education in the country.

Also speaking, Gov. Nasiru el-Rufai of Kaduna State, said that the timing of the review of the book was apt, considering the current moral decadence in Nigerian public schools, and the society at large.

He said his administration would adopt the books in the state education curriculum.

He equally disclosed that President Muhammadu Buhari had already directed the Federal Ministry of Education, to adopt the books for use in all Federal Government Colleges. (NAN)
