• The Federal Government has rescinded its earlier decision to upgrade four Federal Colleges of Education in the country to universities.

It will be recalled that the FG, sometime in May, approved the upgrade of Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo; Federal College of Education, Zaria; Federal College of Education, Kano; and Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education, Owerri to universities.

However, the Provost of the Federal College of Education, Kano, Dr. Rabi Jubrila Muhammed, who read a Federal Government memo dated August 19, 2015 to journalists, said it directed her to resume duty as the provost of the institution.

She refuted speculations that the affected provosts were the brains behind the Federal Government’s decision to stop the conversion of the colleges to universities.

Dr. Muhammed described the allegation as untrue, wondering how only four provosts could have influenced the government’s decision without any substantial reason.

When asked if the Federal Government’s initial pronouncement on the eve of former President Goodluck Jonathan’s departure to upgrade the colleges was beneficial to the development of education in the country, the provost simply said both decisions had their advantages.

Meanwhile, the Academic Staff Union of the FCE, Kano, has asked its members to embark on a one-week warning strike to express its dissatisfaction over the issue. (NAN)
