• Delta NUT Suspends Proposed Strike.

    Teachers in Delta state, under the aegis of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), has suspended its proposed strike action following an agreement reached between the state government and the union.

    In a communiqué issued at the end of an extraordinary emergency meeting of the State Wing Executive Council (SWEC) of the NUT yesterday, the union expressed satisfaction with the timely intervention of the governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa over his genuine assurance to address the issues raised by the union within two weeks.

    Among the agreement reached at the meeting were the payment of June 2016 salaries to all primary school teachers within one week; payment of outstanding May 2016 salaries to teachers in five local government areas, amounting to N89million within two weeks through the state government argumentation and immediate payment of outstanding June 2016 salaries of teachers on level 13 and above in secondary schools across the state.

    The agreement also included the immediate release of implementation of outstanding promotions of primary and post-primary school teachers from 2014 to 2016 by SUBEB and PPEB; an upward review of the number of graduate teachers in primary schools to be promoted to salary grade level 15 and above and implemented within two weeks and that the accountant-general’s office should prepare and submit to September 2016 JAAC meeting, the two months arrears of consolidated salary and peculiar allowance of primary school teachers arrears of May/June 2016 and February 2016 to date.
