• It is a common practice in our Universities that the best graduating students are retained by their Alma mater who offer them automatic employment with hopes that they impact similar first class knowledge on students coming behind them.

But for Samuel Omope, who graduated as the overall best student from Crawford University, Igbesa, Ogun State, the story is different.

His dream according to him was beyond being a lecturer. His reason was based on the experience, among others of his father, who is a lecturer at the Lagos State University, Ojo.

According to the 21-year-old, Nigerian lecturers are poorly paid. “I know what I am saying. Apart from my father who is a lecturer and operator of a private school, my mother is a civil servant with the Lagos State government and their earnings are not much. They struggled to pay my school fee which was just in a range of half a million naira yearly.

With such a background, the only thing now that can make Omope, the First Class graduate of accounting take to lecturing according to him is if such an opportunity presents itself without a better option.

Omope who shone at the convocation ceremony of his alma mater,  won six categories of awards and was rewarded with cash gifts.

Apart from being the overall best with a Cumulative Gradient Point Average (CGPA) of 4.79, he also won the Departmental Prize, the Parents Forum Prize, Professor Peter Okebukola Science Foundation Prize, Mrs Ngozi Osueke’s Prize for the best behaved male student and Messrs Adebo Ojo and Co Prize for the best accounting graduate.

On how he achieved the feat, he said, “I had determined to be very successful in my studies right from when I gained admission into Crawford University.

I remained focussed and committed throughout the period and I thank God for crowing my effort with good success,” he pointed out. His studies schedules were just like that of average students.

Omope does not believe that students must have to be awake all night or always with their books before they can be excelled in their studies. “I read only when I had the opportunity to do so but with seriousness.

One certain thing was the fact that I attended every lecture after which I go to library to study. I hardly read in hostel but I engaged my friends in useful discussions and also played with them.

I also attended social functions but with moderations. I went to bed latest 10.00pm and woke up around 4.00am after which I studied for just two hours before I prepared for the day’s activities,” he said.
