The Vice Chancellor of Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu, Prof. Uche Ikonne, has announced that for the first time in its history, the university would issue to those that have cleared themselves, their certificates on the convocation ground.
The Vice chancellor made this known during the 25th Pre-convocation Press Briefing held on Thursday, 17th August, 2017.
Speaking at the event, the VC said that a total of 4,447 students will be graduating on Saturday from the university, with 15 of them graduating with first class in various disciplines.
Two hundred and ninety seven (297) graduands will be receiving Masters degree certificates. He further stated that 72 Medical Doctors will also receive their certificates.
Prof. Ikonne disclosed that the university would use the occasion to install the first Emeritus Professor in the person Prof. Frank Akpuaka -a Professor of Plastic Surgery, who retired meritoriously from the University.
The Vice Chancellor stated that the pre-convocation lecture will be delivered by the Honourable Minister of State for Education, Prof. Anthony Anwukah on the topic, “Nigeria and the dynamics of global education”.
Other features of the convocation will be the conferment of Honorary Doctorate Degrees on three prominent Nigerians namely Senator Bello Hayatu Gwarzo, an industrialist, Elder Emmanuel Adaelu and a diplomat, Dr. Uchenna Emeloye who is an alumnus of ABSU.
He also used the opportunity to inform journalist that the university has attained full accreditation for all professional programmes including Medicine, Law and Nursing Sciences, among others, saying that his administration has introduced Engineering courses, Surveying, Public Health and Geo-Informatics.
