The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali (OON), has reiterated his commitment to building a befitting Postgraduate School complex for the University, saying that it was long overdue.
Prof. Ambali stated this last Wednesday when he received members of the Board of the University of Ilorin Postgraduate School, led by the Dean, Prof. B. L. Yusuf, who visited him in his office.
According to the Vice-Chancellor, the foundation has to be attractive, stable and strong enough to hold the rest of the Postgraduate School, which is the reason why more concentration has been devoted to undergraduate programmes over the years by the administration in order to preserve the quality of intakes. This, he observed, has made the International Association of Universities (IAU) to regard the University of Ilorin as a champion of postgraduate education in Africa.
“There is no doubt that we are becoming more and more important not only nationally but at international level, so we have no choice than to support you to realise your dreams”, he added.
Prof. Ambali,who also pointed out that the issue of funds was a major challenge, said the University management was working towards boosting its Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), harnessing the resources and plantations on campus.
“We shall continue to operate within our financial resources, just be rest assured that once our earnings increase, you will be part of the beneficiaries”, he said.
The Vice-Chancellor, who endorsed the Board’s request for a bus and a tricycle to ease the operations of the Postgraduate School, also noted that the Supervision Allowance is a priority.
He explained, “That is our responsibility, because if some people have devoted their time and energy to supervise students, it is only fair that we don’t allow their sweat to dry before we pay them.”
He also pledged that the request for an upward review of the revolving fund set aside for academic operations within the PG School would also be looked into.
In terms of admission, Prof. Ambali enjoined the Postgraduate School not to admit more students than they are able to cope with, in order not to lose our identity, quality and overburden our supervisors, saying, “I think you people have started on a good footing; you have set your targets and be rest assured that the management will support you to achieve your goals”.
