• The management of the University of Benin has released an official statement over a report that a final year Law student of the institution committed suicide.

In the statement, the UNIBEN management revealed that the deceased, identified as Daniel Iyoha, at the point of his death was not a student of the institution.

The statement read: “As a responsible corporate Institution, in as much as we would have loved to allow the deceased young man to rest in peace by avoiding any form of controversy with his name, and in the process causing his already traumatised parents more anguish,we however, find it expedient to set the records straight, as we do not only owe the public explanations, but the government of the day as well.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Late Daniel Iyoha (may God bless his soul) was not a duly admitted student of the University of Benin. From available records at the disposal of the University’s Information and Communication Technology/Central Records Processing Unit, the late Daniel Iyoha, had indeed been offered provisional admission into the Department of Theatre Arts and Mass Communication for the 2009/2010 academic session.”

“But he again applied for admission to study Political Science and Public Administration in the 2011/2012 academic session and was again given provisional admission. He nonetheless failed to pay the requisite and duly approved charges to complete the admission process and was therefore not a Student of University of Benin, having failed to formalise the admission process in his two attempts to become a student of the University.”
